The unit is small and came with cables and power supply needed to put it immediately to use. Instructions were easy to follow. The unit works just fine for the PA application I needed -- XLR microphone into amp and speakers.

First, let me go out on saying I usually get lucky when buying online. Even products which aren't very well rated seem to work well and do what they promised when I get them. I'm usually one of those people who read a review like this and say, "oh it's one bad review. I doubt it'll happen to me." Well, if you are like that, you too should be wary of buying.
This is what the item is said to do:

Now let me go through what it actually does.

Nope. The device adds noise, to be honest. Preamps are supposed to limit noise and warm up the sound. This adds noise and does nothing to the sound. I tested it with a panasonic dvx100 and an audio technica atr 6550 with an adapter for xlr input and a 20 foot cable leading down my boom pole. Although the mic is low end and adds noise on it's own, it sounds better without the preamp. I wanted a preamp to get rid of that noise so I could make my movie professional sounding, or at least better sounding than before. So what does this have to do with the vacuum tube? Usually, noise is added when the vacuum tube is a stock piece of garbage. This says it is hand selected for "exceptional warmth and lowest noise." If I turn on the preamp without plugging anything in, I can hear the tube buzzing. Guess what? that gets amplified as static. The limiter feature does nothing, while the +40db feature only boosts static. But I'll get to that later.

Alright, Ive already covered that this doesn't handle sound. Saying it is the ultimate anything would be like saying a cellphone's movie camera is the ultimate in prosumer video recording tool for any videographer or independant fimmaker. I REALLY want this preamp to be good. I want to just get on with making my movie.

Nope. If you had a studio grade mic, it would sound amazing without the preamp. My $50 shotgun mic even sounded better without the preamp.

This is what I wanted to be true. but it's not.

This item doesn't work. I bet there are other low price preamps out there that are fine. Just, this one isn't. Anyone have an idea of any way to spare me the trouble of returning it? I mean, i'll replace the tube if it's worth it and if it's less of a hassle than returning the device, but I can't be certain unless someone more knowlegeable can shed some light on any sort of solution. Don't get me wrong, I know my way around advanced electronic equipment, but when it comes to preamps, I only know what they're supposed to do and how they help. I don't know enough about them to be able to say whether or not it's worth keeping this one and just modding it. I'm sure if you buy this, you'll be in my position.
